Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Monday, January 19th
The life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is celebrated throughout
America. He is one of the giants in our nation’s history.
How old was Dr. King when he was assassinated in Memphis? Answer: Unbelievably, Dr. King was only 39 years old when he was killed. He accomplished so much in such a short time!
How old would Dr. King be today if he was alive?
Answer: 85 years old.
Dr. King was the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. How old was he?
Answer: 35 years old. Interestingly, Dr. King donated the $54,123 prize money to further the Civil Rights Movement.
What is Dr. King’s most memorable speech, when was it given, and where?
Answer: Dr. King gave his “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963 in Washington, D.C.
We know Dr. King’s first name as Martin. However, did you know that he was actually given a different first name at birth?
Answer: Yes! Michael.
Dr. King believed in peaceful non-violence to further cause of civil rights. Dr. King followed the beliefs of what other great activist and leader?
Answer: Gandhi.
The extraordinary life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is celebrated on Monday. A special all-school assembly hosted by our 8th Grade students and their teacher, Mr. Thompson, will be held at the beginning of the day to commemorate the achievements of Dr. King. A special permanent display will also be unveiled at that time. The public is invited to attend. The event begins at 8:45 a.m. in our gymnasium.
Also on Monday evening starting at 6:30, the monthly school board meeting of the district will be held in the library. Please attend.
Media Night will be held on Monday. Parent permission slips are required and are to be turned in as students arrive in the morning at 8:35.
Our boy’s basketball teams play several games this week – all home games. On Tuesday, our “A” team faces Paris followed by our “B” team versus Drought. On Wednesday, Brighton visits Washington-Caldwell. On Thursday, we host Paris. Tip-off times for all these contests is 5:20 p.m. GO BULLDOGS!
Four Year-Old and Five Year-Old Kindergarten Registration for the 2015-2016 school year will be held at Washington-Caldwell on Tuesday, January 27th at 6:00 p.m. here at school. Know someone who has a Kindergarten-age child? Encourage them to attend Kindergarten Registration on January 27th. Washington-Caldwell is a great school with great people: students, parents, and staff members. Talk up W-C!!
Report Cards will be sent home on Friday, January 23rd.
I want to congratulate Mrs. Diane Tylinski for her seven excellent years of employment at Washington-Caldwell as a teacher’s aide. Diane’s final day at our school was Thursday. She leaves to begin her student teaching experience that will eventually lead to her securing a teaching positon this fall. All of us at Washington-Caldwell wish Mrs. Tylinski well in all her future endeavors.
The weather remains cold and at times snowy. Please dress your children appropriately. Also, please listen to area T.V. and radio stations for school closing information due to inclement weather. It’s Wisconsin!
Please drive safely at all times around school. Remember to wear seat belts at all times – seat belts save lives!
